Honorary Citizens of Moscow

 Honorary Citizens of the City of Moscow 
The title “Honorary Citizen of the City of Moscow” was established in 1866, and in 1917 it was abolished by Decree of the Central Executive Committee and Council of People’s Commissars of RSFSR. This title was awarded to the citizens of Russia and other states for outstanding contributions into development of the city and special merits before the Moscow people. The names of the people who were awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the City of Moscow before 1917 are included into the Book of Honorary Citizens on its first pages.

By Law of the City of Moscow adopted on January 25, 1995 the title “Honorary Citizen of the City of Moscow” was reinstated. As before it is awarded by the Moscow City Duma.

The Honorary Citizen is awarded the Certificate of Honor, the testimonial document and the Sign on a dark-red ribbon. The names of Honorary Citizens and resolutions of the Moscow City Duma on awarding the title are included into the Book of Honorary Citizens of the City of Moscow. This Book is stored in the Moscow City Duma.

From 1997 the title “Honorary Citizen of the City of Moscow” was awarded to 13 persons.
